Installing & Purchasing Pendant Lights

Pendant Lights are known to add character and interest to a space, they are features and are quite often statement pieces. Installed correctly, they can make a room, but if installed incorrectly at the wrong height they can look out of place and ruin a space completely.

So, what do you need to know when purchasing pendants & what height is the correct height to install your pendant light?

One important piece of information to have on hand when purchasing your pendant lights is the height of your ceiling. If you do not know this be sure to either measure or ask your builder. If you are unsure of the height of your ceilings and only have a 2.4m ceiling but purchase a stunning 1 metre long pendant it is sure to be an eyesore as it will hang extremely low and you will be unable to walk under it. It is also a great idea to know the overall space you are working with prior to purchasing your pendant. This could avoid disappointment when installing a fitting which is either too small or too large for the area.

Here are a few simple tips to keep in mind when installing pendant lights;

  • In an entry area or living area pendant lights should be installed no lower than 2m off the ground. This is to ensure that your tallest household member/ guest can comfortably walk below the fitting without hitting their head on it.
  • When installing kitchen bench or dining room pendants ask the tallest member of your family to stand by and install the pendant just above their eye level. This ensures that when you are congregating in these areas, no one is having to look over or around pendants which have been installed too low.
  • When installing bedside pendants sit on the edge of your bed and install them just above your eye level. This will ensure that when you are in bed it is easier to see when you are reading.
